Categories
Categories within the WordPress environment provide a way for users to navigate or find a site’s main subject areas and for search engines to rank your pages. They might be described as sorting bins for your posts.

| Blue | Yellow | Orange | Green |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sky | Lemon | Vermillion | Forest |
| Aqua | Mustard | Pumpkin | Lime |
| Royal | Canary | Burnt | Moss |
As in the example above’ they can also have a parent – child relationship to further sort your posts. Care should be taken not to make the category too broad and keep the number manageable, 5 to 8, and use them to define core subjects. WordPress requires the use of categories and will assign “Uncategorized” by default.
Tags
Tags assist in organizing and grouping posts by effective use of keywords that relate to the content.
Tags improve the usability of your site by helping visitors quickly find a specific subject without needing to scan all your posts. (wpbeginner.com/glossary)
Effective Application
Before jumping in and creating categories it is prudent that I create a website outline or structure. This skeleton will help identify what categories and or subcategories to create. In addition, category descriptions should be populated as best practice.
Deployed properly, categories and tags will create an effective digital filing system for my posts and content, and users can find content quickly.
